Siyaj participates in forming the first Arab committee to follow up on the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s recommendations on children’s rights

Formed in the presence of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development: Civil society in Yemen forms the first committee in the Arab region to monitor the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s recommendations on children’s rights, including what has been and has not been implemented. The committee, comprised of non-governmental civil society organizations working in the field of childhood, focuses on monitoring and following up on the state’s implementation of the 12 recommendations resulting from the UN Secretary-General’s 2005 study on the state of children’s rights in the world, as well as the contributions of civil society in this regard. The committee was formed last week in the presence of Dr. Thaira Shaalan, Director of Programs at the Arab Council for Childhood and Development; Mr. Kamal Al-Faki, Coordinator of the Child Development Unit at the Arab Council for Childhood and Development; Dr. Nafisa Al-Jaifi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood in the Republic of Yemen; and the heads and representatives of ten national organizations specializing in children’s rights as founding members: (Siyaj Organization for Child Protection, the Democratic School, Al-Saleh Foundation, Al-Islah Association, Siraj Organization, Ibhar Organization, Alternatives to Combat Child Labor Program, and the Foundation (Human, Sol Organization). The committee will expand the participation of civil society organizations specializing in childhood to include a number of organizations working in the governorates and the capital. Seyaj Organization for Child Protection appeals to both the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Attorney General of the Republic to urgently address the death sentence against a 15-year-old child.
