Seyaj Organization for Child Protection appeals to both the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Attorney General of the Republic to urgently address the death sentence against a 15-year-old child.

The organization said in Messages I sent in this regard indicate that the Zanzibar Primary Court sentenced the child Hani Mohammed bin Mohammed Ahmed Al-Ka’amdi, 15 years old, to death on November 27, 2022, despite his birth certificate proving he was born in January 2008.

Seyaj for Childhood confirmed in two letters addressed to the Chief Justice and the Attorney General that the condemned child is still a minor, lacking legal responsibility, and that sentencing him to death is a clear violation of the law. In accordance with national laws and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Yemen has ratified.

The victim’s lawyer called on the Seyaj Organization to intervene to protect and advocate for the child. Lawyer and human rights activist Hussein al-Hindi, from Abyan Governorate, confirmed that a team of lawyers and human rights activists in the governorate will form a defense team before the judicial authorities until this ruling is overturned by the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. He demanded that the victim be treated in accordance with the law during detention, investigation, and trial, given his status as a minor.
