The Al-Tawasul Foundation for Human Development in Hodeidah screened the film “The Story of Emad” as part of a workshop for educational leaders and teachers aimed at reducing school violence against children. The workshop was funded by the British organization Progressio.

The screening, held on January 28, 2010, focused on school violence against children and was organized in cooperation with and funded by Progressio. It took place in the foundation’s main hall and was attended by representatives from several civil society organizations, including Mr. Othman Eidrous, a representative from the Seyaj Foundation in Hodeidah; representatives from UNICEF, Hodeidah University, the Saba News Agency, the governorate office, the education office, and a number of school principals and social workers. images (4)

Professor Mohammed Al-Khiwani, the branch manager of the organization, delivered a speech welcoming the attendees. He emphasized that this workshop was a continuation of previous work in this field and praised the role of the Progressio organization in advocacy and capacity building. Joseph Alou, the development worker in the governorate and coordinator of the Civil Society Organizations Capacity Building Program, also gave a speech, addressing the violence perpetrated against children and the discrimination they face. Following this, a documentary film produced by the Seyaj Organization for Child Protection in 2009, with funding from Save the Children, was screened. The film depicted violence against children in schools, homes, and on the streets, highlighting how such violence can lead children to avoid school and instill hatred and resentment towards teachers, the school, and their peers. Professor Fahmi Al-Muqatri then presented a paper discussing the types of violence perpetrated against children and outlining the characteristics of childhood. He told the community that… It meets the child’s needs and desires so that he becomes a good individual in the future, which touched on international treaties on the rights of the child and our country’s accession to them. After that, Dr. Al-Azzi Al-Barai from Al-Hudaydah University presented a working paper entitled Violence Against Children: Concepts and Dimensions. Then the discussion was enriched by the workshop participants, who came out with recommendations, the most important of which is raising awareness among the family about the dangers of violence against children, as well as raising awareness among the local and educational community on how to deal with the child. Imams and preachers have a major role in raising community awareness of the dangers of violence and combating it. The participants also recommended distributing educational brochures and publications in various media outlets.
