The Siyaj Organization for Child Protection renews its call to the Yemeni Parliament to pass a law setting a safe age for girls to marry.
Siyaj calls for adopting the principle of a gradual approach to the age of marriage, allowing the judge or legally authorized body to properly assess the best interests of the girl between the ages of 16 and 18.
Anything below that age constitutes a crime punishable by law for the guardian, the husband, and the marriage officiant.
Siyaj also calls on the government to establish clear and practical mechanisms to address the factors contributing to child marriage, such as civil registration, girls’ education, low awareness, and negative social culture.
Siyaj for Child Protection appreciates the role played by the Ministries of Legal Affairs and Human Rights, among others. National and international institutions in this regard.
Siyaj Organization renews its call for the enactment of a safe marriage law that takes into account gradual implementation and the best interests of girls.
