The 2009 annual report of the UN Secretary-General on children and armed conflict discussed the six grave violations committed against Yemeni children in the war between the Houthi group and the Yemeni government, which had been ongoing since mid-2004.
The UN report relied on a report prepared by Seyaj with support from UNICEF on the situation of child victims of armed conflict in Saada, Hajjah, and Amran in northern and northwestern Yemen.
Seyaj noted that this was the first UN report on Yemeni children in armed conflict, and that it led to a number of Yemeni parties, including government actors, militias, and armed groups, being placed on the list of shame for violating children’s rights.
The organization also noted that the report was available in English only.
