With the participation of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, Yemeni civil society formed the first committee in the Arab region dedicated to following up on the implementation of the United Nations Secretary-General’s recommendations on child rights and identifying what has and has not been implemented.
The committee, formed by non-governmental civil society organizations working in the field of childhood, focuses on monitoring state implementation of the twelve recommendations that emerged from the Secretary-General’s 2005 global study on the status of child rights, as well as the contribution of civil society in that regard.
The committee was established in the presence of Dr. Thaera Shaalan, Director of Programs at the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, Mr. Kamal Al-Faki, coordinator of the Child Development Unit at the council, Dr. Nafisa Al-Jaifi, Secretary-General of Yemen’s Higher Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and representatives of ten national child-rights organizations as founding members, including Seyaj Organization for Childhood Protection.
The committee intends to broaden the participation of specialized civil society actors in childhood issues to include organizations working in governorates and the capital secretariat.
Issued by the Committee of Yemeni Civil Society Organizations for Following Up on the UN Secretary-General’s Recommendations on Child Rights – Yemen, Sana’a, 11 April 2010.
