Seyaj appealed to the President of the Wasab Al-Aali Primary Court in Dhamar governorate to annul the marriage of ten-year-old Saud Yahya Mohammed to a man in his sixties.
In its letter, the organization said the marriage of a girl of this age violates justice, basic human nature, and children’s rights. Seyaj noted that the child had attempted suicide by poison before seeking help from a local tribal sheikh because she hated the marriage and any claimed consent from her is not legally or morally valid.
The organization also asked the court to punish the father, the husband, and the marriage registrar with the strongest possible penalties for violating the rights of a child and exposing her to certain harm.
