The father of the twelve-year-old girl Asma pledged not to complete his daughter’s marriage until she reaches the legal age, following efforts by Seyaj Organization for Childhood Protection and the cooperation of the security authorities in Wasab Al-Safil district, Al Hudaydah governorate.
This was done through a written commitment submitted by both the girl’s father and the man to whom she had been contracted in marriage. The commitment was handed to the district security director and stated that marriage procedures would not be completed for six years, until the girl reached the age of eighteen. Both parties also pledged not to prevent her from continuing her education.
District police director Mohammed Musaad Al-Mawkali said that both the father and the prospective husband had become convinced that the marriage should not be completed until Asma reached the legal age, adding that any violation of the pledge would lead to legal action.
