Seyaj appealed to the authorities in Taiz governorate to annul the marriage of a twelve-year-old girl who had been forced to marry a man in his fifties in order to settle a family debt.
Seyaj’s representative in the governorate followed the transfer of the child from criminal investigation police to the juvenile home. Lawyer Ali Al-Sarari said the girl had been married five months earlier and that the organization intervened to prevent her from being returned either to the husband or to her family.
According to security officials cited by Seyaj, the child had been subjected to sexual violence and physical torture by the husband, forcing her to flee to the police. The organization called on the governor, the head of the highest court, and the head of the public prosecution in Taiz to intervene immediately to annul the marriage, compensate the girl, hold those responsible accountable, and take measures to ensure her safety and protection.
